*SPOILERS, BUT THE SHOW’S BEEN OFF THE AIR FOR YEARS, SO IT’S FINE*
One can only hope this means the Downton Abbey movie plot will be an alternate universe where Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) doesn’t die after the birth of his son.
Fans were never the same after that shocking third season finale. The show moved on — it had to — but we were always left to wonder what could have been had Stevens signed on for more work at Highclere Castle.
Sure, he might’ve not wound up in the role of The Beast alongside Emma Watson in Disney‘s live-action reboot of Beauty and the Beast, but dedicated viewers of Downton would have gladly made that sacrifice.
Fast forward to Summer 2018…
Official confirmation of a Downton Abbey movie finally came, and with it so did speculation of a possible return from The Abbey’s one true heir. Welp, Mr. Beasty himself decided to fan the flames of that hope, posting to Instagram a reunion photograph with his Downton wife, Michelle Dockery.
Should Matthew have a mustache for the #DowntonAbbeyMovie…? Vote below… ☑️ ❎A post shared by Dan Stevens (@thatdanstevens) on Aug 12, 2018 at 10:30am PDT
“Should Matthew have a mustache for the #DowntonAbbeyMovie…?”
Yep. That’s either a welcome tease or a cruel joke.
The photograph, taken in Los Angeles, also features Allen Leech, who played Tom Branson on the show. Dan, Michelle, and Allen’s characters were all super close, so fingers crossed…
We’ll let you know when and if this hint becomes something official!
P.S. We vote NO — Matthew should not have a mustache. LOLz![Image via PBS.]
